The International Advisory Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation is among WHO’s key activities addressing the various health-related aspects of the non-ionizing radiation. The committee’s annual meetings aim to protect public health by minimizing harmful exposure and promoting safer technologies related to the use of non-ionizing radiation.
The 2025 annual meeting was held virtually in June with its main focus on WHO framework on NIR protection. The event gathered representatives of the world’s leading non-governmental organizations in official relations with WHO – International Society of Radiology (ISR), International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB), International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH).
The International Organization for Medical Physics represented the global community of over 30,000 medical physicists, encompassing more than 90 National Member Organizations and six Regional Organizations.
IOMP has maintained official relations with the World Health Organization since 2015, as a non-state actor, contributing specialized scientific and professional expertise across key domains of medical physics. These include diagnostic imaging, therapeutic applications, radiation protection, technological innovation, and the development and support of the global medical physics workforce.
IOMP clearly stated its position on recognizing the leading role of medical physicists in the responsible and effective use of non-ionizing radiation in healthcare. IOMP, either independently or in strategic partnership with its member organizations and partners, proactively contributes to the establishment of global standards, capacity-building initiatives, educational programs, and the generation and distribution of scientific and professional resources.
With a dynamic communications platform connecting over 65,000 individuals across more than 100 countries, IOMP has evolved into a premier platform for professional engagement, knowledge dissemination, and lifelong learning in the field of medical physics. Expanding IOMP’s activities in the field of the non-ionizing radiation, including but not limited to professional recognition, education and training, scientific research, safety and dissemination activities, highlights IOMP’s leading role for our professional community and global healthcare.
