John Damilakis, PhD
President, IOMP

New MPI Editors, IMPW 2023, Palestinian Association of Medical Physics

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 1st IOMP Newsletter of the 2023. As you probably know, Medical Physics International (MPI) is the official journal of the IOMP. The purpose of MPI is to provide an open and free platform for medical physicists to enhance the medical physics profession by sharing their experience, ideas, and resources in the areas of education and professional activities. Dr. Slavik Tabakov and Dr. Perry Sprawls have completed their 2nd term as Editors-in-Chief and the IOMP followed the selection process to select the new Editors. I have the pleasure to inform you that after successfully conducting this process, the IOMP Executive Committee has approved the applications of Dr. Francis Hansford and Dr. Sameer Tipnis and elected them as the new Editors-in-Chief of the MPI. Dr. Hansford is a Deputy Director of the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute (RAMSRI), Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, and Associate Professor of Medical Physics, Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, University of Ghana, Accra, Ghana. Francis is also the IOMP Publications Committee Chair. Dr. Tipnis is a Professor of Radiology/Chief medical physicist at the department of Radiology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, USA.  I heartily wish them a fruitful and successful term.

IOMP’s Executive committee decided to celebrate the International Medical Physics Week this year (IMPW 2023) during the last week of April 2023 (24-28 April 2023). The main purpose of the IMPW is to motivate organization of activities that will result in the promotion of the subject of medical physics globally.  We strongly encourage all regional and national organizations to organize relevant events. IMPW is a great opportunity to raise awareness of medical physics, improve public understanding of the role medical physicists play in healthcare, enhance interaction between medical physicists and the society at large and promote active involvement of university professors and students in medical physics related activities.  As in the previous years, the IOMP will organize a series of webinars during the Week. All IMPW webinars will be freely available so anyone can register and benefit from the expertise of distinguished speakers. Information will be uploaded on our website soon.

Palestinian colleagues succeeded to establish the Palestinian Association of Medical Physics (PAMP) as an organization and applied to become a National Member Organization (NMO) of the IOMP. PAMP is a member of MEFOMP. In accordance with IOMP’s by-laws, the PAMP application was reviewed by the Professional Relations Committee and was subsequently endorsed by the IOMP ExCom. The Council is currently voting to approve PAMP to become an NMO of IOMP.
