While it has a longer history in certain parts of the world, the International Women’s Day (IWD) marked on the 8th of March, became a global holiday owing to its promotion by the United Nations in 1977. Since then, this day is dedicated to women from all walks of life, meant to empower and honor their achievements. It is, therefore, a great opportunity for IOMP-W to join this celebration through activities that highlight the roles and accomplishments of women in medical physics throughout the world.
The webinars organized by the IOMP Women Subcommittee to mark the 8th of March have demonstrated the need for such events, where members of our profession can learn about the various scientific, educational and professional activities undertaken by women in medical physics across the continents. For instance, last year’s IWD was dedicated to early career female medical physicists, where the three invited speakers (Ashleigh Hull – University of South Australia, Ashley Cetnar – Ohio State University and Leticia Irazola – Centro de Investigaciones Biomédicas de la Rioja, Spain) presented their journeys through research in medical physics as well as their involvement in various professional matters. From targeted alpha therapy to ultra-high dose rate radiation, our speakers presented their respective scientific contributions to the field, while also highlighting their early career involvement in professional organizations to promote medical physics among young scientists and not only. Given the webinar’s success, this year’s IWD will be marked, once again, by three talks from physicists representing three continents: Jennifer Pursley (USA), Yeong Chai Hong (Asia) and Oleksandra Ivashchenko (Europe) (see picture).
They will share their experience as leaders in professional organizations, Jennifer as Chair of AAPM’S Women’s Professional Subcommittee, Chai as President of SEAFOMP and Oleksandra as Chair of Communications & Publications committee within EFOMP. We believe these speakers will stand as true role models to the young generation of women medical physicists, and will inspire all to further advance our profession.
